We’re thrilled to have Trish Doller with us to share more about her latest novel THE DEVIL YOU KNOW.
Trish, what was your inspiration for writing THE DEVIL YOU KNOW?
The primary inspiration was a short story I read in college by F. Scott Fitzgerald called “The Ice Palace” about a young Southern woman named Sally Carroll Happer who was struggling to find her place in the modern world of the 1920s. What struck me about the story was how it echoed into the 21st century and I wanted to give Cadie the voice that Sally Carroll didn’t have.
What did this book teach you about writing or about yourself?
After writing SOMETHING LIKE NORMAL and WHERE THE STARS STILL SHINE, I started worrying that I was falling into a pattern of writing recovery-after-trauma books. I didn’t want to pigeonhole myself, so I decided it was time to try something different, something scary. I am not an avid reader of thrillers or horror novels, so writing THE DEVIL YOU KNOW was more difficult than my other novels and it took me a lot longer. But it also gave me the courage to keep trying new things.
What’s your writing ritual like? Do you listen to music? Work at home or at a coffee shop or the library, etc?
Music is super important to my process. I make a playlist for every project and listen to it almost exclusively while I’m working on that project. My favorite writing spot is on my couch, but I recently turned my son’s bedroom into an office where I go when I need total concentration. Working at coffee shops and libraries is fun in theory, but I do my best work alone when no one is around.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Trish Doller has been writing for as long as she can remember, but didn’t try to be a published author until more recently, something for which you should be thankful.
She was born in Germany, grew up in Ohio, and graduated with a degree in journalism from Ohio State University. Married someone really awesome and moved around with him a bit from Maine to Michigan and back to Ohio. She’s worked as a radio personality and as a staff writer for her hometown newspaper. She also had a couple of kids along the way who have become two of the most interesting adults she’s ever met.
These days she lives, works, and sails in Florida with a relentlessly optimistic border collie and a pirate.
