Hey everyone! It’s Clara Kensie, back with a new Question of the Week! Pretty much the only thing writers love as much as writing is talking about writing. So each week here at Adventures in YA Publishing, I post a question for you to answer. The questions cover all topics important to writers: craft, career, writers’ life, reading and books. Together we’ll become better writers by sharing tips and discussing our habits and practices.
The other day, my friend Erica O’Rourke — author of the TORN trilogy (Kensington, out now) and the upcoming DISSONANCE series (S&S BFYR, Fall 2014) — tweeted, “Swamped with work, so going with a comfort read this weekend: Agatha Christie. Do you have a comfort author or book?” I thought that was an excellent question, and asked Erica if I could use it as my Question of the Week. She said, “Absolutely!” So without further ado, I ask you…

Clara Kensie’s comfort book |
My answer: Yes! My comfort book is DAISY FAY AND THE MIRACLE MAN by Fannie Flagg. The book follows the adventures of Daisy Fay throughout her tween and teen years in a small Southern town. Filled with quirky, endearing characters and hilarious escapades, DAISY FAY AND THE MIRACLE MAN was published in 1981, and I’ve probably read it at least once a year since then. I used to bring it on every work trip, and read it when I was dining alone at the hotel restaurant and flying on the plane. I would always laugh out loud, sometimes with uncontrollable giggles, and embarrass myself. Hee! Now it’s on my Kindle so I always have it with me. I love Fannie Flagg’s books (she’s written many, the most popular probably being FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE), but DAISY FAY is my comfort book. It always makes me smile.
WHAT ABOUT YOU: Do you read a comfort book or author when you’re stressed or sad or lonely? What makes it so comforting to you?
