Beautiful Creatures meets The Body Finder in this spellbinding new trilogy.
Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.
All her life, Barrie Watson had been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lived with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead–a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.
Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family’s twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.
Author Question: What is your favorite thing about COMPULSION?
It was so much fun to get to do a Gothic novel! I’ve loved seeing books like Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and The Lynburn Legacy bringing Gothics to a whole new batch of readers in a fresh way. Adding the Gothic elements to a Southern setting similar to Beautiful Creatures gave me such rich material to work with in Compulsion. I’ve always adored books with exotically dangerous mansions, eccentric characters, and elements of magic, mystery, and suspense. The world of Watson Island with its equally charming and ugly history, beautiful scenery, and unique mythology is a storytellers dream. It has all the elements I love—a haunted past, regret, anger, continuing conflict, and questions of morality galore.
My favorite thing about Compulsion, hands down, is the setting and how it shaped (and twisted) the characters and families who live there. The island, and especially the Watson’s Landing plantation, became an integral character in the book.

Laura is a typical fifteen-year-old growing up in the 1960’s, navigating her way through classes, friendships, and even a new romance. But she’s carrying around a secret: her mother is suffering from a mental illness.
No one in Laura’s family will talk about her mother’s past hospitalizations or increasingly erratic behavior, and Laura is confused and frightened. She finds some solace in art, but when her mother, also an artist, suffers a breakdown, Laura fears that she will follow in her mother’s footsteps. Left without a refuge, can she find the courage to face what scares her most?
Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Crazy?
What I love most about my book is that Laura holds herself together—no, more than that, she survives in spite of watching her mother completely fall apart not once, but twice, and maybe even three times if a shadowy memory of her early childhood serves her right. Maintaining her own sanity doesn’t come easily though. Neither her father nor her older sister helps her make sense out of the craziness, and if Laura hadn’t gone digging on her own she just might have become the next one in the family to succumb to the beast of mental illness.

Fans of Ally Carter, especially her Heist Society readers, will love this teen mystery/thriller with sarcastic wit, a hint of romance, and Ocean’s Eleven–inspired action.
Julep Dupree tells lies. A lot of them. She’s a con artist, a master of disguise, and a sophomore at Chicago’s swanky St. Agatha High, where her father, an old-school grifter with a weakness for the ponies, sends her to so she can learn to mingle with the upper crust. For extra spending money Julep doesn’t rely on her dad—she runs petty scams for her classmates while dodging the dean of students and maintaining an A+ (okay, A-) average.
But when she comes home one day to a ransacked apartment and her father gone, Julep’s carefully laid plans for an expenses-paid golden ticket to Yale start to unravel. Even with help from St. Agatha’s resident Prince Charming, Tyler Richland, and her loyal hacker sidekick, Sam, Julep struggles to trace her dad’s trail of clues through a maze of creepy stalkers, hit attempts, family secrets, and worse, the threat of foster care. With everything she has at stake, Julep’s in way over her head . . . but that’s not going to stop her from using every trick in the book to find her dad before his mark finds her. Because that would be criminal.
Author Question: What is your favorite thing about Trust Me, I’m Lying?
I love the capers the most. Julep’s voice from the start was so whip smart and edgy that I had to work hard to make the plot live up to it. So I researched the heck out of popular cons and thought long and hard about how to twist them to suit Julep’s purposes. I bought books that probably put me on the FBI watch list. (No, really. I’m pretty sure an FBI agent is spying on me from the house behind mine.) I even tried one or two of the cons myself to see if they’d work…and they did. (I’ll leave it to you to guess which ones I tried.) My goal was to make Julep work for it, you know? I hate it when heist books or movies provide only the sketchiest of references to how a con works. I want details. I want to see the logic behind the plan. That’s what I tried to accomplish in TRUST ME, I’M LYING. Did I succeed? You’ll have to read the book to find out. 😉
